Every day, buyers and sellers log on to the world wide web in the hopes of finding a treasure or earning some big bucks. With the internet being as large as it is, there are plenty of auction sites to consider. In that spirit, this article attempts to compare two of the largest, most well-known auction sites in existence. They are both popular, offer excellent features for both buyers and sellers and are in constant competition with one another. Amazon and eBay are the auction sites of topic and while, in many ways they are alike, there are an equal number of ways in which they differ.
Beginning with similarities, both eBay and Amazon charge their sellers a listing and final value fee. The listing fee, from both auction sites, is non-refundable even if the item does not sell. However, an unsold item may be relisted for free at both Amazon and eBay auction sites. Amazon Auctions charge their sellers a $.10 listing fee with the possibility of having all listing fees waived if the seller signed up for a Pro Merchant Subscription. Where listing fees are concerned with eBay, the minimum fee is $0.25 for a starting bid of $.01 to $0.99. If an eBay seller opens an eBay Store, listing fees may be as low as $.05 each.
An unfortunate aspect of internet auction commerce, but a presence nonetheless, is an uncompleted transaction. This usually occurs when a buyer fails to send payment. In this instance, both eBay and Amazon auctions will refund the final value fee for that particular auction, which is based on the final bid amount. Both auction sites also provide seller tips and a bulk loader program, which allows the seller to upload a number of auctions all at once.
One of the greatest differences that stand out amongst these internet auction powerhouses is their policy on poor seller performance. According to Amazon's website, the company reserves the right to charge sellers a fee for poor seller performance. The amount of this fee is not mentioned and, therefore, sellers have no way to know how much this fee may be. According to Amazon Auctions, reasons for this fee may include excessive refunds, high rates of A-Z Guaranteed claims filed against the seller and/or credit card chargebacks related to Amazon Auction payments. According to Amazon Auctions, they will communicate any charges to the seller prior to assessing them. On the other hand, eBay auctions has an entirely different approach to seller performance. Their 'Item Not Received' complaint process was recently changed to a 'Fraud Alert' system, which allows buyers to file a complaint with eBay if they do not receive their merchandise or if it is not as advertised. Much like the non paying bidder complaint process, the seller has an opportunity to respond to any complaint and communicate with the buyer in order to resolve the dispute. If an amicable resolution cannot be reached, the buyer may close the complaint and request a refund under eBay's Buyer Protection plan. In order for an item to qualify, it must be priced at a minimum of $25.00 (excluding shipping & handling).
In recognition of it's most well-performing sellers, eBay offers it's PowerSeller program. This membership is restricted to sellers who earn a minimum of $1,000.00 in sales each month and maintain a 98% or greater feedback rating. The PowerSeller program is exclusive to eBay and it's members. Few other auction sites can come close to the number of buyers, sellers and merchandise that is offered on eBay every day. Regardless, entrepreneurs are grateful for the competition of other auction sites. It is this competition that inspires greatness, which promotes more customer incentives and lower listing fees for sellers.

Ebay Fined £1.5 Million For LVMH Sales On French Ebay

A Parisian court has fined eBay 1.7m euros (£1.5m) after ruling that it had not kept to an injunction banning users from selling on LVMH perfumes.
eBay users in France are blocked from selling certain branded perfumes -including Christian Dior, Givenchy and Kenzo - on the internet auction site.
eBay said the injunction hurt consumers and called it an abuse of "selective distribution".
The company added that it hoped the ruling would be overturned.
"Today's outcome hurts consumers by preventing them from buying and selling authentic items online," said Alex Von Schiermeister, director of eBay Europe.
"The injunction is an abuse of 'selective distribution'. It effectively enforces restrictive distribution contracts, which is anti-competitive.
"We believe that the higher courts will overturn this ruling and ensure that e-commerce companies such as eBay will continue to provide a platform for buyers and sellers to trade authentic goods."
He added that the fine was "disproportionate given that eBay complied with the injunction".
Reselling
Users in France are being blocked from selling on the LVMH products, even if they are genuine and unused.
LVMH has previously accused eBay of brand counterfeiting and of using some of the keywords of LVMH brands in its adverts.
It said that sales on the site violated Christian Dior's distribution network, which only allowed sales through specialist dealers.
French sellers have also been blocked from selling the perfumes on the UK website.
In the UK, 150,000 perfumes in the top 20 brands were sold on eBay in the 12 months to September.

More than one in 10 Canadians who shop online have fallen victim to identity theft, with Ontarians hit the hardest, a survey released yesterday suggests.
The survey, conducted by Ipsos Reid on behalf of PayPal Canada, found that 12 per cent of all online shoppers polled in Ontario claimed they had been victims of identity theft. Albertans were second-hardest hit, with nine per cent reporting their identities stolen.
"People are doing more and more transactions online and that predisposes them to more chances of a fraudulent transaction happening," said Darrell MacMullin, country manager for PayPal Canada. "Fraud continues to evolve. Don't share information online that you don't want everyone to know."
Only eight per cent of respondents from British Columbia and Quebec were hit, while fewer than six per cent of respondents in Atlantic Canada reported having their identities stolen.
According to data from Phone Busters and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Centre, which is operated by the RCMP, Canadians have reported 8,048 cases of identity theft so far this year, totalling $7.3 million in losses.
In 2007, there were 9,971 cases of identity theft reported, totalling only $6.4 million in losses.
Globally, English-speaking countries have been hardest hit by identity theft, according to the study. Around 10 per cent of online shoppers in Canada, the United States and Britain reported having their identities stolen, compared to only five percent of respondents in France, Germany and Spain.
Online banking, Internet-based payment systems and social networks containing vast amounts of personal details are proving to be the newest frontiers where criminals can commit identity theft.
According to the PayPal study, more than 85 per cent of respondents are aware of identity theft. Many actively try to minimize their chances of falling victim.
Bob Spence, a spokesman for the Privacy Commissioner of Ontario said consumers should take several measures to protect themselves from identity theft.
He said consumers should conduct an annual credit check on themselves, as well as immediately report any activity they deem to be suspicious. He also said that consumers should regularly change their online passwords and be stingy when it comes to giving out personal details online.

Okay hands up who has had enough of ebay monopolising the online auction market? Wow! that's quite a few hands! The truth is ebay in the last few months has really started to show it's nasty side. Most sellers now are really struggling to make a profit with their fees having recently just gone up - again. Ebay Fee Hike Sparks Mass Exodus

"If eBay's fee changes were meant to shore up market share at a time when sellers are increasingly migrating to competitors such as Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500), initial response suggests it may do the opposite: eBay's veteran sellers are furious, with some forecasting ruin for their businesses.
"Ouch!" said Laura Ricciotti, a seller from Windsor, Ontario, about Tuesday's announcement of a new fee structure for the online auction giant.
Ricciotti said the new fees, set to go into effect Feb. 20, will pinch her already tiny margins selling children's books through her eBay (EBAY, Fortune 500) store, Read With Me Books, which began in 2000 with posts for a few auctions for baby clothes and other finds.
"Sellers need to remain competitive in their pricing to do well in eBay's global marketplace, and it will be very difficult to continue to do so and still see a profit," she said, under the new scenario."

"In the uproar that erupted over the planned fee hikes and other policy changes eBay announced last week, one drew particular ire and incredulity: eBay's plan to hold payments sent through its PayPal payment service for up to 21 days in certain circumstances.
The freeze will apply to transactions eBay (EBAY, Fortune 500) considers high-risk, and is intended to protect buyers from the hazards of a bad transaction. By hanging on to funds, eBay can easily refund them if a seller doesn't ship a purchased item or sends damaged goods.
What is sparking reactions ranging from annoyance to panic among some of eBay's sellers is the company's criteria for determining what transactions fall into the "high-risk" category. Factors beyond sellers' control, including the number of "feedback" comments they have from previous buyers and how many of those comments are positive, can trigger the freeze.
"It's like a bad dream, really," said Dana White, an eBay seller who lives outside Ocean City, Md., and deals in used clothing, shoes and accessories. "I'm a small seller. All I need is two negatives in a 30-day period, and they will hold funds."

"Representatives from PayPal, which eBay acquired in 2002, declined to comment on how the new policy would affect individual cases, but noted that the changes are paired with increased protections for merchants who use the service.
If Paypal deems a transaction fraudulent, it currently covers merchants for up to $5,000 per year. That cap will be lifted for eBay's PowerSellers, the site's highest-volume merchants, who will now receive unlimited coverage. PayPal will also offer PowerSellers protection on items sent to any address (not just confirmed addresses, the current policy) and expand its merchant coverage for international sales.
PayPal estimates that its new hold policy will affect less than 5% of eBay transactions, and it emphasizes that only relatively untested sellers risk incurring a freeze. Merchants who have been registered with eBay for more than six months, have a feedback score of 100 or higher (meaning they've received positive comments for at least that many transactions), and have a "dissatisfied buyer" rate of less than 5% will never have their funds held.
But on a site that hosts an estimated 113 million listings worldwide at any given time, a policy affecting as many as 5% of those transactions puts millions in jeopardy. If funds are frozen after a sale, PayPal will release them after the buyer leaves positive feedback, three days after the item's confirmed delivery, or at the end of 21 days without a dispute, whichever happens first.
Paypal says the factors that will play into its formula for triggering a hold include the length of time a seller has been on eBay, the seller's feedback rating, and the final cost and shipping fees for the item.
Because PayPal has sole discretion over whether to freeze funds, sellers are upset about a perceived lack of accountability. They're also grouchy about eBay's efforts to force buyers to rely on PayPal: in some categories and for all new sellers, eBay requires vendors to offer PayPal as an option or have their own merchant credit card account. The site has blocked rival payment systems such as Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) Checkout, saying they are not yet proven safe."

PAYPAL CHANGE USER AGREEMENT
Every Paypal 'customer' should have received a email stating that they have changed their user agreement, but more worrying is the fact that they will NO LONGER BE REGULATED BY THE FSA (Finacial Services Authority)
This is very worrying to say the least the FSA regulates all the banks in the UK and most other e-money companies. The fact that they have moved to a Luxembourg based company is a little worrying as they are clearly trying to side-step certain regulations...
Here is a copy of the email:

We would like to announce important developments affecting all PayPal accounts in the European Union (the "EU").
No action is required on your part, and you will be able to continue using PayPal with no changes.
Currently, PayPal (Europe) Ltd. is the service provider for PayPal in the EU. PayPal (Europe) Ltd. is a UK company regulated and authorised by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in the UK as an electronic money institution. This authorisation enables PayPal to provide its service throughout the EU.
From 2 July 2007, a new PayPal company, PayPal (Europe) S.Ã r.l. & Cie, S.C.A.
(PayPal Luxembourg), will become the service provider for PayPal in the EU. This is a Luxembourg entity regulated as a bank by the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF), the Luxembourg equivalent of the FSA. PayPal Luxembourg will provide the PayPal service throughout the EU.

Google Checkout - A Great Alternative to Paypal
If you are a online merchant then why not start accepting payment via Google Checkout? The Bay of E does not allow Google Checkout & If you try & intergrate the payment system into Ebay you will get a warning message along the lines of "Google Checkout is banned by Ebay as a payment option" But what you CAN do is invoice your winning bidders via Google Checkout... simply click the number of bids your item received that has sold, then click "Show Email Addresses" once you have your winning bidders email simply "send invoice" via Google Checkout..

PAYPAL IN THE NEWS & IT'S ALL BAD NEWS AGAIN...
Well...it appears the beast that is Paypal is upsetting many people including big corporate organisations. Only recently they AGAIN limited my account as they wanted my suppliers info & information regarding wheter the item I was selling was in stock. I supplied the web address, item number, order number, contacts name & address + company number as supplied by companies house. The firm in question is 1000% ligitimate, yet they say my items are 'high risk'

PAYPAL and EBAY 'LEGAL CROOKS' STEAL MY MONEY!
I have become very frustrated over the three years or so I have been with Ebay & Paypal.
If you have a Paypal account, be worried... They can freeze funds for no reason whatsoever & even after providing faxed documentation, passport, utility bills, suppliers information, they still have your money which will build up some interest for them during the 180 days for sure.
I have since discovered a few UK based auction sites, the first I cam accross is named: CQout (seek-you-out) which is a good alternative to Ebay. More people should start selling on sites such as these as a alternative to Ebay, or if your happy with Ebay, as I addition to your sales on the bay of E.(vil?)
The other is called QXL.com!The third of my favourite auction sites is called Preloved With Preloved you can turn your clutter into cash for free. All free ads include a photo & remain online until sold! Preloved

Have been around since 1997 and are the UK's original auction site. They DO NOT CHARGE for winning any item, You get chrged for listings but the rates are extremely competitive & much much less than Ebay.
If you have stoppped selling on ebay, & are worried that you will not get the same amount of hits, then You can generate more traffic to your blog or ebay sales page. You can generate the same amount of hits/traffic by joining a few traffic exchanges.
Amazon.co.uk is a huge resource for many people in the UK & I buy all my books from here as their prices are practically unbeatable. I also buy all my Comp Games
here as there is a choice of pre-owned or new. I have a PSP, DS & have a Wii on the way! (can't wait!) Amazon is great for games for every console on the market & is also another great avenue for sales.I have read so many horror stories about people losing their cash just check here:
I have lost approx £400 from Paypal, I have had enough of these legal crooks acting God & doing as they please, and making up their own rules... Don't even get me started on the "Buyer Protection Policy" there claim is so hollow it echoes!CQout is the 2nd biggest Auction site in the UK and growing. They claim to have over 260,000 items listed & their listing prices are extremely competitive & in-house payment system 'Easypay' is a joy & a breath of fresh air to use.
I have started this blog for three reasons:
1) To tell people if they are having problems with Ebay/Paypal there are solutions to selling your goods, you just might need to promote your listings a bit more than you would on Ebay.
Any feedback or stories of other peoples dealings with Paypal & Ebay is most welcomed & feel free to email me about anything in this blog. As long as the content is anti-paypal &

UPDATE 27TH FEBRUARY:
Paypal have teamed up with 'Verisign' and realeased a additional security feature to the Paypal login sytstem. As well as the traditional login with email & password users now can have the choice of 'Security Key Fob' These are made by Verisign the people who process Paypal's transactions & encrypt them for added security. The fobs are free to business sellers but cost $5 to non-business members (£2.70) Mr Pescatore an Analyst at Gartner said:
"If Paypal wants to increase security for its users, why are they charging $5?
"All authentication with a token proves is that you have the token in your possession.
"I am concerned that business think that tokens are a solution to security problems. Consumers never know as much about security as they should"
If Paypal really wanted to get to the root of the phising/spoof email problem then they should at least start by offering these new fobs TO EVERY MEMBER regardless of account stature/status. They make BILLIONS in profit every year, I'm sure these fobs cost much less than they are charging & I wouldn't be at all surprised if they are making a profit on them!
